Siegfried and Roy - The Magic Box (in 3D)

Animal-trainer magicians Siegfried and Roy rose from humble beginnings in postwar Germany to become Las Vegas’ most popular entertainers. Directed by Brett Leonard (THE LAWNMOWER MAN, VIRTUOSITY) and narrated by Anthony Hopkins, the IMAX documentary THE MAGIC BOX fashions a biography of the famous duo through interviews, dramatic re-creations, and performance footage of their spectacular Las Vegas stage shows, all presented in lifelike 3-D photography.

LAS VEGAS � Last week, Las Vegas lost one of its most beloved acts when one of Siegfried and Roy�s royal white tigers attacked Roy Horn onstage at The Mirage. The illusionist was severely injured before a sellout performance on October 3, and is still in serious but stable condition. ¹³

The last time Siegfried and Roy were on the show together was back in 1999. Siegfried and Roy have come on about their IMax film “Siegfried and Roy and the Magic Box.” It was an extraorinary film, by the way. YUMAN: In his area in the Secret Garden which is a private area. And certainly, the last person to blame anybody especially Montecor would be Roy or Siegfried. Siegfried & Roy held in that light. You want to live up to their standard to their animal husbandrying (ph).³

Work and relaxation are, in their case, so interwoven that it is unclear what viewers are attracted to most in their show. The biographical angle of the film Siegfried and Roy and the Magic Box implies that the harmony of their mini paradise is most likely the greatest attraction. Everything in it finds its own place, as long as it is exclusive. Siegfried and Roy don�t buy trash. Siegfried and Roy own 55 tigers and 23 lions and for decades they have helped to protect felines. They treat the animals like home pets, who communicate with them emotionally.¹²

The entrance of the hotel is home to a lagoon with towering waterfalls and a 54-foot high volcano that spews smoke and fire 100 feet above the water once an hour nightly. Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat features dolphins swimming in the two and one-half million-gallon pools. Also created for the Mirage by Siegfried and Roy is the White Tiger Habitat, a tropical environment featuring the exotic cats. The 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium in the lobby features 1,000 coral reef creatures.¹¹

The Siegfried and Roy Theatre holds around 1,500 people, and runs six nights a week for 44 weeks a year. Siegfried and Roy�s show debuted at The Mirage in 1990, and earned the hotel and casino about $44 million in annual revenue. Ticket prices for the show run about $110, and are among the priciest on the strip.¹³

In other words, the Klok-Electra teaming is more of a merging of corporate interests than a merging of personalities. For example, Siegfried and Roy met back in 1959 (some say 1957) — two poor boys from Germany fleeing miserable lives and who landed jobs on the intercontinental luxury liner TS Bremen. Logical, the point of mentioning their relationship was the fact that you just can’t throw two people on the stage together and hope it works — there has to be chemistry. It is Siegfried and Roy’s chemistry that makes them so successful, popular and loved by many. They persevered and became the de facto Kings of Las Vegas - earning the fame and riches they�d eventually acquire night after night. There has always been a mystique and aura about Siegfried and Roy, seeing their faces on that huge marquee in front of the Mirage was otherworldly � they were the guardians of Las Vegas Boulevard.¹⁴
